Let Go and Let God
Releasing Our Children
Ps. 127:3-4: Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth (NIV).
Children are gifts from God, but we must remember they will leave our home in 18 - 20 years. Our purpose as parents isn't to hold onto these gifts tightly, but to prepare them to be released like the arrows of a warrior.
What a challenge! These verses should encourage us as we see our kids growing more and more independent each day. Just like arrows, we can guide and direct them, but at some point we have to let go.
How do we prepare them for life on their own? By letting go, bit by bit, each day. By speaking messages of encouragement and confidence, rather than skepticism and worry. By allowing them to make age-appropriate choices and hold the responsibility of those choices. By allowing them to work through the hardships that their choices may bring, and by teaching them that God is at work through those hardships. By teaching them that He will NEVER forsake them.
Release your kids a little bit each day and remember that your goal is to let go. Let go, and let God.
